The Research Imaging Institute: A Window into the Brain
At the Research Imaging Institute (RII), we are deciphering the structure and function of the living brain like never before. Our mission is to develop non-invasive imaging and measurement techniques that revolutionize how we understand neurological diseases, behavior and cognition. With neuroscience research as our top priority, we foster collaboration across departments and institutions—bringing together the brightest minds to solve the mysteries of the mind.
Center for Biomedical Neuroscience (CBN): Uniting Experts for Breakthrough Innovation
Founded in 2001, the Center for Biomedical Neuroscience (CBN) at the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine serves as the hub of neuroscience research at UT Health San Antonio. Our mission: to drive groundbreaking discoveries that will shape the future of brain health.
Our initiatives include fostering collaboration across disciplines to fuel transformative discoveries. Providing research funding—supporting three pilot projects per year to spark innovative collaborations. Bridging the gap between research and treatment, ensuring new findings leads to real-world solutions.
At UT Health San Antonio, our work is redefining what’s possible in neuroscience. Whether it’s pioneering research, cutting-edge imaging technology or fostering groundbreaking collaborations, we are committed to improving brain health, one discovery at a time.

In The News
For decades, Alzheimer’s disease research has focused almost exclusively on harmful proteins in the brain. But scientists at The University of Texas at San Antonio are taking a new approach to how the disease is understood and treated.
Like a busy restaurant kitchen, our cells depend on well-organized working spaces to assemble the “recipes” that keep the body healthy. UT San Antonio scientist, David Libich, PhD, recently received a five-year, $2.1 million Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences to study how certain proteins form these organizational hubs and what happens when things do not go according to plan.
Scientists at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UT San Antonio) are investigating a major immune system pathway that leads to the development of chronic pain and a drug that has the potential to stop the process in its tracks. Their study, published April 22 in Cell Reports, is the first of its kind to show a path toward the prevention of chronic pain.
